New Land Rover Defender UK review – has it gone soft?

I've been out to drive it and here is what my brain thinks of it

The new Land Rover Defender is a bit of a controversial car. The Internet seems to love the old rickety one so much that it's been deemed sacrilegious to use the name on this new, softer, more rounded family SUV.

These people haven't driven it, however. And I have. Here is what I think of the new Defender, and those people from the Internet. Remember to check out Tim Rodie Drives Stuff on YouTube for more of this loosely factual nonsense.

  • Current family drive is a Disco 4, but the Defender will be our next car. I’m very excited!

  • It had to go soft to make it more liveable, if you’ve ever driven the old one you’d understand. The fact that it can do what the old one can and more together with the added comfort makes it a fitting replacement. I want one.

    • Each to their own. Old defenders for people like yourselves that one one of them, I’ll have a new one for me.

  • It's not a Defender but it's a very capable replacement for the Discovery ~ perhaps the most capable yet. Too much electronics though.

  • I do like the look of the old defender, there’s something about it.

But saying that, I had one for a while. That brings you back down to earth with a thud.

Hard, harsh, slow, poor economy, cold, forever throwing shafts. Not exactly the most reliable of vehicles to be honest.

Though I think this is rather mundane to look at, it looks a far better vehicle than the one it replaces. Space, comfort, quiet and can still do the off-road and better on road.

    What’s not to like?

    Gis one

  • I'd have one, if we could afford one. And I think SUVs are the work of Satan.

    Thanks for the review!
