New Years day we got together for a drive through the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California. An early start for those of us coming up from OC we met at 7:30AM on the PCH in Santa Monica. From there we cruised up the PCH to Mulholand Highway then worked our way back south and eventually stopped for lunch at Dukes. We had many great experiences along the way including an unexpected, figurative, run in with the only America factory Porsche racing driver - the one and only Patrick Long.
One of Patrick's favorite cars is his 1973 aubergine 911. This car is very clean and tastefully modified. It has all the right stuff; SC flares, lightweight carpet kit, MFI to name a few. In this picture you can also see the upgraded rear spring plates making ride changes quick and easy. You never know who you may run into while out for a drive in SoCal from celebrity to racer to custom car builders we're all looking for days like this.
Another car featured in the drive that day was this beauty; a 997.2 RSR trubute car.
This is not just an average tribute car it actually has every detail from a 997 RSR except for the unattainable RSR engine. Down to the proper Porsche Motorsport body work and replica safety cage the car also sports a set of air jacks. The owner asked me to drive his car when we made a stop at the famous, Snake. This is a small section of Mulholland Highway between the ever popular Rockstore and the Kannan Road. He really had to twist my arm to get me in the drivers seat; once there was only one thing to do – give’er hell. The road features a compact set of twists and turns which will usually have you in second and third gear in car or on a bike. It was a hoot to drive this beast on this day and at this location and I’m grateful for the experience.
A quick stop for some socializing and to meet other folks who we're also out for a New Years Day drive in this wonderful area of the Los Angeles area. Good cars and great people makes for memorable times and we blessed to have these moments.
We covered about 100 miles without the commute from OC to Malibu and spent half a day enjoying sunshine beautiful roads amazing people and Porsches. Life is good!
