On Monday, merely 1 day after his Championship win in Abu Dhabi, Nico Rosberg took the decision to retire from Formula 1. After speaking with his wife and his management he approached Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team boss, who was obviously surprised. Toto is supportive of Nico's decision and hails him as a brave man. All of this led to Nico's announcement today at the FIA Press Conference in Vienna.
After competing in the German Formula BMW and Formula 3 Euro series Nico gained an opportunity to test for the Williams F1 team. Nico was offered an opportunity to study Aeronautical engineering in London, but he declined in order to race in GP2, where he won the title.
Fast forward 25 years after Nico started karting at the age of 6, and Nico won 9 out of the 22 Grand Prix races this year to win the World title in a close finish at Abu Dhabi. After finishing 2nd in the Championship for the past 2 years it was a great relief for him to finally win his Maiden Championship, he finally accomplished his dream to be World Champion.
Many have praised Nico's decision to retire from Formula 1, it is indeed a big decision, especially after winning the Championship just 5 days ago. Toto Wolff has stated that new options for the Mercedes team will need to be considered, but that will be left until Monday of next week. Nico Rosberg has praised his wife heavily for his Championship as she supported him during a vital season whilst also taking care of his daughter. I'd like to believe that Nico's daughter is a huge part of his decision to quit the sport, since he used to fear for his own father during races.
Regardless the reason why Nico has decided to retire it is a great shock, but why shouldn't one finish when he's on top of the world... besides, he's achieved what he came to achieve and now he can enjoy himself with his family, I'd definitely want the same.
