Nico Rosberg has announced that he is to retire with immediate effect just five days after winning his world first championship in Abu Dhabi.
The announcement by the Mercedes driver was made in Vienna at the FIA world champions gala.
He had this to say: "For me it is a very special day to receive the trophy this evening. It is going to be amazing but for another reason: I want to take the opportunity to announce the end of my F1 career"
"I had a clear dream since I was six years old: that was to become F1 world champion and it was very clear in my mind, whatever I could think, I have achieved it. I will remember forever."
"This is a brave decision by Nico and testament to the strength of his character," said Mercedes boss Toto Wolf.
The question now stands, what will this mean for next year's driver lineup for Mercedes and the rest of the Formula 1 grid?
