Nico Rosberg to join the Sky Sports F1 team in Japan.
The reigning World Champion will be part of the presenting team at the Japanese GP
Many had wondered whether Nico Rosberg’s shock retirement announcement after he won the World Championship would be the last we would see of him in F1.
It was recently announced that he would take on management duties of Robert Kubica, ruling out a return to driving in the sport, if ever that was in any doubt.
With his recent visits to Silicon Valley, he has been singing the praises of electric and autonomous vehicle manufacturers and, following an alleged meeting with Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag, there was widespread speculation that he may be a part of Mercedes Formula E venture. With them set to enter the sport from 2019, could he drive for the team, or could he even manage them?
Other than that, he has shown little desire to return to racing, having seemingly immersed himself in family life with his wife, Vivian, recently giving birth to another baby girl.
It was announced on Wednesday, though, that Rosberg will join the Sky Sports F1 presenting team for the Qualifying and Race coverage of the Japanese Grand Prix.
Following the announcement, he said "I am thrilled to confirm I will be joining the Sky F1 team this weekend in Japan,
"Since my retirement last year, I have only attended a few Grands Prix so I am pleased to return to the fold.
"In 2016 I had a great win at this track, so I am looking forward to share my insights and memories of Suzuka. I love this race track and the fans are also amazing . It will be great to have the opportunity to thank the Japanese fans for their wonderful support over the years."
He will join the regular crew who have expressed excitement at the acquisition, with Brundle saying "Nico will provide both the most ardent motorsport fan and the casual viewer with expert analysis and insight in what is a crucial race.”
There's no word on whether the option of this being a more permanent role is there. Let’s just hope he doesn’t have to interview Hamilton!
