Nikola has just managed to get a deal for 1,000 refuse trucks for giant Republic Services in a deal that could be worth $10 billion over time as if they deliver as promised the deal could expand up to 5,000 trucks. The company which is yet to produce and deliver any vehicles looks set to start delivering electric trucks in 2021 which it is hoping will put them ahead of the Tesla Semi truck.

“Nikola specializes in heavy-duty, zero-emission Class 8 trucks. The refuse market is one of the most stable markets in the industry and provides long-term shareholder value,” founder Trevro Milton has stated.

This new deal has sent Nikola stock soaring and makes them a real competitor to Tesla if they can deliver on their promises. I would imagine this will make Tesla up their game on getting the Tesla Semi to market as Nikola has also said they will begin deliveries of Hydrogen powered trucks in 2023.

The company told Yahoo News that this puts their backlog of orders at 14,000 and exceeds $10 billion worth of revenue for the company, which if accurate would make them one of the biggest players among the electric upstarts hitting the market currently.

  • It's STILL vapourware guys. As of right now, there is no safe way of storing hydrogen without it migrating through the tank or making the tank so brittle that at two years old it shatters with the lightest tap. The energy density is pathetic and the conversion rate is both slow and highly unstable as far as making it a commercial prospect goes. Hold your breathe, this will get worse before the bubble bursts. This wretched outfit has NO product worth a bean to sell, no competent scientists, engineers or test mules. It's just a socking great scam. In my opinion.

    • Just like EVs. Glad we’re all in agreement. Your coherent Will couldn’t answer my question a few months ago. Maybe you can. If electric is the future, why isn’t there any electric vehicles in the workforce? Tow trucks, snow plows, fire...

    • We're only 10 years into serious EV ownership and the vast majority of that comes towards the end of that time frame. What happens in the States is but a small fraction of what the rest of the world does. Electric commercial vehicles are big...

  • Maybe Republic Services should have toured Nikola’s factory before placing an order.

Sarcasm aside, Nikola needs to build a factory before it can build trucks. Undoubtedly, the contract specifies an inspection and acceptance period and payments after delivery. No risk for Republic.

We will have to see if Nikola actually decides it has to build a factory or not. I am betting they just want to dump the stock and bail.
