Nine of the best car-related April Fool’s jokes
Over the years many a car maker has tried to fool us with somewhat questionable results....
As the 1st of April is nearly upon us, we are eagerly awaiting a deluge of press releases from car makers informing of us of some miracle breakthrough or another.
Upon checking the calendar though, it quickly becomes evident that said car maker has tried to fool us. Before a metric weight of new tech breakthroughs is unleashed this coming Sunday, we thought we’d take a look back through some of the best April Fool’s jokes of recent years.
BMW dDrive dog basket
Because even man’s best friend should be able to experience the sheer driving pleasure of a BMW, and after all who doesn’t like dogs.
Vauxhall Mobile kebab shop taxi
After a good night out, Vauxhall said they’d give us a magic taxi to get us home while feeding us kebabs. Turns out it wasn’t a real thing leaving many of us disappointed and hungry with no way home at all.
Mercedes AMG Sprinter
If this AMG Sprinter was a real thing, have no doubt that all of your courier deliveries would turn up several days early thanks to that 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine.
Mazda MX-5 four seater
Back in 2014, Mazda announced this run-out special of the third generation MX-5. Given that it looks like it would take a corner like an overloaded freight train, we weren’t even fooled for a second.
Hyundai i10 Popemobile
Once upon a time, Hyundai tried to fool us into thinking that a very holy man would be slumming it in a South Korean hatchback. Turns out, he wouldn’t as it was the 1st of April when this ‘news’ emerged.
Skoda’s ‘Rent-a-Family’ test-drive service
According to Skoda, this exclusive test drive service gave potential buyers the chance to really test a car to the limit with “crayon-wielding kids, insolent infants and talkless teens.”
If crayons and destruction were not enough for you, then the test also contained some pure torture in the form of your“Rent-a-Family asking drivers if they’re ‘nearly there yet’ a minimum of five times per drive and mentions at least three times that someone needs to find a loo.”
All of which sounds like a living hell to us.
Mini Hipster Hatch
For this one, we have few words aside from to say that, no please god no, unless of course, you want a Mini hatch in ‘organic pumpkin’ to go with your man bun, which then you're sorted.
Vauxhall wind-up Adam C
With this one, the joke was on us as we thought that Vauxhall had finally chosen to improve the Adam city car by giving it more power. Turns out we were left massively disappointed.
BMW Magnetic Tow Technology
BMW branded their “Magnetic Tow Technology as the “Next phase of EfficientDynamics seeing 30 percent improvement in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.”
The basis of this fantastic tech breakthrough was that you could magnetically hook yourself to a fellow BMW driver to save fuel. We can only assume that this product has been around for many years already with the German carmaker keeping it a secret until now.
So, are these the best April Fools jokes from carmakers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Maybe the magnetic tow works with all cars, because it seems like there’s always a BMW hooked to my rear.
Bimmer drivers don't need 'magnetic towing technology', they tailgate enough as it is.
Don't forget the electric Mercedes powered by lots of AA batteries. The Mercedes sprinter AMG would have been good.

Something like the AMG-Sprinter already existed. Made out of a predecessor of the Sprinter, the MB 100:
