No one wants to buy this $25,000 ‘Audi R8’

I wonder why

I’ll be honest, I’m not too happy when I see tuners butcher Toyota MR2s to turn them into kit cars. Is that too harsh? Sorry.

This is yet another kit car based on the Toyota MR2, obviously aspiring to be an Audi R8. It was available from eBay with an asking price of around $25,000 but the high bid was $10,000 so the seller couldn’t get rid of the car.

The biggest issue with kit cars is that it is perfectly okay if you want to build something unique for yourself, but you have to bear in mind that you probably won’t be able to sell it.

It almost looks like an Audi TT. Sort of. It’s fitted with R8-style wheels and R8-style headlamps. The custom made Audi grille and bumpers, custom made fenders and side blades also look pretty good, in a way.

It’s not horrid, in that it was actually carefully built by people who knew their way around a workshop, but… would you actually drive it?

  • Fair play for the craftsmanship which looks a lot better than on some other attempts.

But not my cup of tea. I have an affinity for the MR2. My Dad had a MKi in white, followed by an MKii in metallic turquoise. GT with T Bar roof. We sold it about 10 years ago not long after he passed away as it needed more money spending on it than it was worth at the time... We'd had it 18 years by that point!

So given the opportunity for someone with that level of skill and an MR2.... I'd be restoring it completely to factory condition. With the possible exception of a CD player in place of the tape deck that Dad's '93 example had.

  • Better than the "Veyron" based on a Hyundai Tiburon that made the rounds a few years ago

  • I’d drive it but wouldn’t pay $25,000 for it
