Norris, Camara sign up with Carlin for 2018 Formula 2 season
Carlin has announced a line-up of rookie Lando Norris and experienced campaigner Sergio Sette Camara for its return to the FIA Formula 2 fold in 2018.
The British outfit took a hiatus from the GP2 Series in the current season - as it runs as F2 under the FIA aegis, but it makes a return for the 2018 season.
Fresh from his 2017 European F3 title, the McLaren reserve Norris was heavily tipped to continue his association with the British team into F2. "I’m going into 2018 unquestionably aiming to achieve more success by winning races," he said.
"But 2018 will also be a big learning year. Getting experience of the increased power, enhanced aerodynamics, the [Pirelli] tyres, the mandatory pit-stops and competing at new tracks like Bahrain, Baku and Sochi.
"It’s an educational year, I’ll be new to Formula 2 while Carlin is returning after a season out of the category. I’ll also be up against some very experienced F2 drivers. I’m hopeful it will work to our advantage that 2018 sees a newly designed [Dallara] car being raced for the first time since 2011.
"It’ll be my fourth year competing with Carlin. Trevor heads up a great operation at Carlin and I feel part of the ‘family’ there. It’s a friendly environment and one in which I feel very comfortable in.”
Meanwhile, a former Red Bull junior driver Camara will move from MP Motorsport to Carlin, with whom he contested the Macau Grand Prix in 2016, finishing third.
In his rookie F2 season, the Brazilian endured a difficult start to his campaign, but fought back in the second half with a maiden win in Spa, which he followed it up with a podium in Monza.
"To be signing with Carlin is the best," he said. "They are a top team and I know they will be up there. I had previous experience with Carlin in Macau in 2016 and it was amazing to finish third in such an important race with them.
"The environment within the team, with the other drivers, the mechanics, the engineers is just so happy and positive, I’m looking forward to spending the season with the team in such a big championship.
"To have such a strong team mate as Lando, who is so highly regarded is really motivating. We will push each other to the limit to be better drivers and to get Carlin the results it deserves as a team. Thanks to my family and my sponsors who make this possible, I’m very grateful for this opportunity," he said.
Team boss Trevor Carlin commented: "I’m delighted that we’re able to announce a fantastic driver line-up on our return to the F1 support paddock. With Lando and Sergio we have one of the most exciting young line-ups there is.
"We’re extremely proud to be able to continue for the fourth consecutive season our relationship with Lando. It’s extremely rewarding to continue working with a driver up the FIA ladder.
"It will be a great benefit having Sergio’s season of experience at this level with the Pirelli tyres and we know having worked with him before his great speed and potential. The whole team is very excited about the hard work and challenges ahead," he said.
Norris is competing in the Abu Dhabi weekend with Campos, in order to get himself ready for the forthcoming post-season testing and the 2018 season.
