North America has gained its first ever McLaren F1 servicing centre
After extending the production car top speed record by the largest margin since the Second World War, the McLaren F1 has been immortalised as one of the greatest cars of all time.
Achieving 240mph when most supercars were barely reaching 200, the Gordon Murray design was years ahead of its time. And McLaren has decided to help further the life of its halo cars in the USA by setting up the North American McLaren F1 Service Centre in Pennsylvania.
It's one of two facilities outside of McLaren's home in Woking that can cater for these thoroughbred supercars, as well as offering services to other 'heritage' McLaren vehicles. This means that McLaren F1, SLR, P1, and 650S owners can bring their pride and joys to the centre to have the mechanics perform bespoke MSO-grade maintenance.
From basic annual maintenance to full system refreshes and even major renovations, the servicing centre will have any caring McLaren customer frothing at the mouth. Specifically for the F1s, the US centre means that owners don't have to ship their cars over to the UK to have any vital work done.
Considering only 20 cars are estimated to have made it over to the States, it may seem like a tad of overkill from the guys at MSO to create an entire servicing centre, but the cars we're talking about here need constant fettling to keep them in 230mph+ form.
The McLaren F1 Service Centre has the pleasure of holding one of the original sets of special tooling required to service the F1. The allows the necessary annual F1 service to take place which involves a meticulous level of inspection to the vehicle. This comes down to a fluids, filters and wiper blade replacement and a full suspension inspection.
The servicing also includes a “vehicle shakedown” on a closed test track to put the car through its paces, stretching the necessary muscles needed to see the F1 blast well past most current supercars.
The Servicing Centre has all the '90s kit needed to keep the F1s of the US alive.
Every second annual service requires an even higher level of inspection and includes a brake inspection, service and flush, a more in-depth vehicle alignment, CV joint service, air-conditioning service and coolant service.
The biggest job that has to be undertaken every five years is the replacement of the fuel tank. This involves removing the entire powertrain from the vehicle, revealing that painfully beautiful 6.1-litre BMW V12 from its carbon cradle.
Producing 621bhp, the twelve-cylinder unit still makes the McLaren F1 the fastest naturally aspirated car ever, with only the turbocharged behemoths of Koenigsegg and Bugatti furthering the overall top speed record.
McLaren plans to open another such centre on the West Coast of the USA, but for now American F1 owners will need to take the 'quick' trip to Pennsylvania to give their car the love and care it deserves.
