Nurburgring names a corner after Sabine Schmitz
We finally did it - the petition worked!
It pains to recall that the Queen of the Nürburgring passed away after battling cancer since 2017. From her incredible achievements in motorsport to her appearances on Top Gear, it is safe to say that Sabine holds a place in the heart of every automotive enthusiast.
Rather than grieve, we should honour her legacy by celebrating her achievements and appreciating who she was as a person. The Nürburgring officials agree with this notion as they have officially named the first corner of their racetrack after her, calling it the "Sabine-Schmitz-Kurve".
The official inauguration of the "Sabine-Schmitz-Kurve" will take place on the 11th of September in the form of a 6-hour race of the Nurburgring Endurance Series, which pays respect to Sabine's victory in the VLN endurance racing championship of 1998.
Many recall Sabine's first appearance on Top Gear in 2004 and the numerous episodes she was featured in; everything from the Nurburgring Van Challenge to "Top Gear vs The Germans". Whether you were entertained by her wild driving on the Nordschleife or you admired her skills in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, you and I will deeply miss her.
