Odi Bakchis takes FD Round 1 in Road Atlanta

Bakchis, Field, and Gittin Jr. take the podium spots at Formula Drift Round 1.

Finally, Formula Drift has returned. Long time opening round Long Beach has been pushed to the end of the calendar, so that means opening round of the 2021 Formula Drift season brings the competitors to Road Atlanta.

It was an entertaining round of competition, some of the biggest names and most consistent drivers were defeated early due car issues or simply who they went up against brought their A-game. Three-time champ Chris Forsberg was defeated by Dean Kearney in Top 32, same happened to former champs Michael Essa and Daijiro "Dai" Yoshihara. Fredric Aasbo only made it to Top 16, same result happened for last years second place champ Chelsea DeNofa and third place champ Ryan Tuerck.

Some people who brought their A-game had to be Yves Meyer and Jeff Jones. Meyer surprised all when he went through Essa and Tuerck, but was stopped by Vaughn Gittin Jr. While Jones went all the way to the Top 4 going through Aasbo.

Last years series champ Gittin Jr. took the third place spot on the podium, while "Frenemies" - though so named by their friendship off the track and during practice and competitor spirit on the track - took the top spots. Matt Field qualified in the top spot and ended with the second place position and Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis took the top spot.

One round down and Bakchis has a 9 point lead to start the season with 100 points over Field's 91. Gittin Jr. sits with 80 tied with Jones. Meyer, Justin Pawlak, Kearney, and Adam LZ are all tied with 67 points. While 8 other drivers are tied with 52 points. It was only round 1, the championship is really is anyone's game.

Formula Drift will return May 21-22 for FD Orlando at Orlando Speedworld.
