On-board video of the week: Lancia Delta S4
Revel in the glory of Lancia's twin-charged Group B legend
Four cylinders, one supercharger, one turbocharger, all-wheel drive and a kerb weight as low as 890kg. Whichever way you cut it, that's a potent mix.
Lancia's Delta S4 demonstrated just what could be done with such a combination. The 1.8-litre rally car produced around 470bhp and won its first event – the 1985 RAC Rally – as well as several other titles.
It's still a devastatingly rapid car by today's standards, too, with reports indicating that an S4 on gravel would sprint from 0-60mph in less than 3.0sec.
The Lancia's career was cut short, however, as the compelling and action-packed Group B series in which it competed drew to a close in 1986. The cars and crowds were getting too unruly, and a series of fatal accidents eventually led to the end of what many regards as the heyday of rallying.
Many of the cars survive, however, and compete in classic shows and heritage events – so the sights and sounds of the most powerful, complicated and quickest rally cars live on.
So, if you've never heard the twin-charged Delta S4 at full chat, you're in luck. Simply hit play on the video below, and let driver Enrico Ottaviani show you what this classic Lancia is capable of.

Had to plug the laptop into the house speakers to get the best of that...now the neighbours hate me!!!
Noting better than rally onboard
Wow... That was one power hungry machine
hate to burst everyones bubble but there is a vent on the front of the S4 that is not there on this on board footage + it's driven sideways at a few points
there is also no supercharger 'whine' i think that this is on board of a delta intergrale 8v not the S4
Morning David! The S4 in the lead shot is not the same car, correct (I didn't want to use a boring on-board snap) - but the car in the video is an S4. A lot of S4s in competition today don't feature the front vent.
You don't hear much pronounced...
