… my true love pulled an absolute blinder: the 911 RSR Turbo 2.1.
This was a hairy-palm special by any standards, built to Group 5 homologation and packing an air-cooled flat-six and KKK turbocharger making over 450 PS at 8,000 rpm.
That mighty Mary Stuart rear spoiler was designed to offset a fairly perilous front/rear weight ratio, compounded by extensive use of fibreglass body panels up front and high-mounted turbo out back.
Despite fearsome grunt and handling to match, Gijs van Lennep and Herbert Müller pedalled the RSR to second overall at Le Mans in 1974, even though they lost fifth gear early on the Sunday morning.
