Despite the increased ride height and some modest extra body protection, the 3.0-litre SC cars that Porsche sent to Kenya in ’78 were remarkably close to stock. The No. 5 car, driven by rally royalty Bjorn Waldegard, led for much of the race, before hitting a submerged boulder while crossing a stream at speed and breaking its rear axle tiebar. No less a figure than racer-cum-mechanic Jürgen Barth was on hand to speedily swap in a replacement part, allowing Waldegard and teammate Hans Thorszelius to finish a remarkable fourth.
