…my true love seriously pulled it out of the bag: the 1970 917 Langheck. (Particularly impressive purchase as this one was scrapped.)
The car that bore the number three in the year of Porsche’s maiden overall victory at Le Mans was the famous ‘hippie car’. This unforgettable psychedelic paint scheme was the handiwork of Porsche designer Anatole Lapine, who would go on to create the famous Pink Pig livery a year later.
Created for the factory-supported Martini Racing team, the radical paintwork is reputed to have caused 917 programme supremo Ferdinand Piëch to grimly remark that a race car “just has to be white”. In a brutal race that saw countless retirements, the hippie car finished second behind the No.23 Salzburg entry, the only other 917 to see the flag that year.
