By 1990, the legendary Porsche 962 was on its last laps. It's most recent win had been at the 1989 World Sports Prototype Championship race in Dijon. The Sauber-Mercedes C9 and C11, Jaguar's XJR-9 and XJR-11, Nissan's R89 and R90 variants and Toyota's 89c-v and 90c-v had all surpassed Porsche. The first of the new 3.5-litre, F1-engined Group C sports cars arrived as well: the Peugeot 905.

Originally to be banned after the 1990 WSPC season, the car was allowed to compete in the following year's championship (as well as in other various forms through the mid-nineties.) With the new 3.5 Group C cars scheduled for 1991, customers were still buying 962's from the old formula.

One such 962 was chassis #174:

From boutsenclassiccars.com:

"This car chassis N° 174 was sold new to BO Strandell Race Team in November 1990. Having never raced, it spent time at automobile demonstrations until January 1992 where it was sold to its second owner an Italian who kept it for 22 years. In December 2013 it changed ownership again to another Italian owner. Finally in 2015 it was sold to the current owners who in late 2019 had it cosmetically restored by Boutsen Ginion Racing. Now it is back up for sale for the next person to continue its legacy.

Under the bonnet you will find a 3,0L water cooled flat six engine (No. 956/201) and an original Porsche 962C gearbox (No. 956 01 067). It is a very low mileage car showing only 200 genuine kilometers on the odometer. An independent certificate of authenticity by Jurgen Barth and signed delivery receipt from the factory is enclosed with the car’s paperwork."

On a side note, this particular 962 is being sold by Boutsen Classic Cars of Monaco, a company owned by former Formula One and World Sports Car race winner Thierry Boutsen.

Boutsen in 2019

Boutsen had his share of successes in Group C Porsches. Driving a Joest Racing 956 with Bob Wollek, he won the first official Group C race, the Monza 1000 km, in 1983. He teamed up with Wollek, Al Unser Sr. and A.J. Foyt to win the 1985 Daytona 24 Hours in a 962. He also claimed one of the closest wins in World Sports Car history at the 1986 Spa 1000 km with Frank Jelinski: winning by less than a second.

The 962 has been demonstrated recently at the Spa Classic back in 2018, is currently based in Monaco and available for viewing.
