Opinion: Painting your own Brakes red is stupid
A quick rant on spray painted red brake
Red brakes make cars go fast. Wait, what? How do brakes make a car go fast? Brakes slow cars down…you're probably thinking. And what does being red have to do with it? Well, nothing really. The thing is fast cars generally have bigger, better brakes that are commonly red or another bright color. These brakes help cars of high performance slow down more efficiently. Being able to brake more efficiently allows you to brake later when coming into a corner. This of course lets you keep up more speed for a longer period of time. So if you think about it, better brakes do help you go faster.
That doesn't mean that by spray painting your car's brakes red, you're making it go faster. Pretty much any kid from the age of sixteen to twenty five that wants a cheap way to make his or her car look sportier - spray paints the car's brakes red. Spray painting your brakes might look kinda cool but it also wears them out faster, which could cause a major accident. Putting spray painted "fake red brakes" on your car is like if you were to own a tiger. It might seem cool at first, but then, one day it bites your face off putting you in the hospital.
On top of the fact that painting your car's brakes is unsafe, it also lowers your car’s value. If you really do want red brakes on your car, you can buy red brake covers for about $150. This is a solution that will not wear out your brakes, and looks better. If you really do want "real red brakes,” companies such as Brembo start selling them for about $3,000. They are pricey, but are worth it in the long run. They do not wear out your brakes, and improve your cars braking power.
I once saw a Toyota Prius with red painted brakes. It’s one thing if you put them on an old Civic Si, but there is nothing remotely cool about red brakes on a Prius. Priuses are not meant to be sporty looking cars! There is no need to try to make a Prius cool. So, if you were that poor person who decided to paint their Prius' brakes, I feel bad for you. You now have a slightly dangerous Prius that you might have to take into the shop for brake repairs, and you are stuck with a Prius that quite frankly looks silly. So if you ever decide to paint your car's brakes, maybe just think about the the consequences before you ruin your car.
