Pininfarina looking into making a luxury SUV to join the Battista hypercar
Pininfarina is an iconic name in the world of high-end cars having designed the bodies for some of the best cars in the world. The Italian design house was behind cars like the Alfa Romeo Spider, the Jaguar XJ220 and the Ferrari Dino.
Today, Pininfarina is on its own adventure and aiming to become a key player in the luxury automotive market. Earlier this year, when the all-electric Battista hypercar was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, the company’s CEO, Michael Perschke stated that it has “a very clear intent to not remain a one-hit wonder.”
In fact, the company is now looking to expand its range with another model. In order to determine which type of vehicle the company will design next, potential customers are being shown previous Pininfarina designed cars. Concepts such as the Cambiano that was released in 2012 and the K550 that aired in 2017 have all been used for the process.
With the current trend in the automotive industry, it’s almost certain that the Pininfarina Automobili will soon have an SUV in its range. In fact, it’s already working on creating a new platform that will support all types of vehicle in an aim to reduce costs. The easiest solution would be to use VW Group’s PPE electric platform. However, reports suggest that this chassis base isn’t capable of supporting the height Pininfarina is planning with its SUV.
Obviously, the Pininfarina name doesn’t exactly go hand in hand with SUV body shapes. And if the company does release a Beluga Whale for the road, a lot of its hardcore fans will be outraged by the tarnishing of the brand. However, with each SUV that gets built, the company will get the money to create another elegant and aggressive Orca like the Battista hypercar. Surely that’s good news for those of us with decent taste.
