Playing Forza Horizon 5 with a steering wheel

Forza Horizon 5 is good with a controller, but what about a steering wheel, handbrake and pedals? I tried the early access preview to find out.

For such a popular racing game, it was odd that some people had such a bad experience when it came to Forza Horizon 4 and steering wheels. For me it never quite worked how I wanted it to unless I cruised around permanently sideways or in a downforce monster.

Naturally then, one of the first things I had to try during the Forza Horizon 5 early access preview was driving with a steering wheel. So I picked the lengthy road that snakes up to the Gran Caldera volcano and plugged in my various space-killing sim racing accessories.

It seemed wrong not to take something Japanese and rear-wheel drive up to and down from the new Mexico map's highest point. So I jumped in the new Toyota Supra and feared for the worst.

Fortunately my expectation of constant fishtailing and being afraid to steer more than 5 degrees soon dissipated. Thanks to tweaks to the handling, which make the cars heavier and more natural to steer, Forza Horizon 5 becomes a steering wheel's best friend.

Okay, the need to be delicate with the accelerator in higher powered cars remains and fishtailing can still happen if you're too slow with opposite lock. But these are, you know, realistic. It's just that you feel like you have much more control overall. At least, in the 25-odd cars I tested.

Anyway, watch the video to see some Forza Horizon 5 gameplay with a steering wheel and also enjoy those improved 4K visuals at 60 frames per second. It is still unclear how good the game will look on Xbox One, but those next-gen consoles really do the Mexico scenery justice.

So when is the Forza Horizon 5 release date? The 5th of November if you buy the Digital Deluxe edition or the 9th for everything else. Those with Xbox Gamepass can play the basic edition for free. A PC version (Microsoft and Steam) is also available.

  • If it's ever possible to buy an Xbox, and once I get a job next year, this is going to be the first thing I will do, is buy FH5 and a steering setup.

  • The wheel support was never the problem (it’s an arcade-like game and would expect it more from project cars 3 or something). The sound of the cars was the biggest turn off for me for forza games, sound like damn electro weed whackers.
