PM to confirm plans to build EV chargers in every new UK home
Boris Johnson's plans are another attempt to improve the national EV infrastructure before the 2030 ICE ban.
After a public consultation by the Department for Transport, it's expected that the government will pass legislation in parliament later this year. Prime Minister Johnson is set to confirm the plans at the annual conference of the Confederation of British Industry.
If passed, this legislation will require homebuilders to install charge points on every new house so that potential buyers could easily charge their PHEVs or EVs. This policy however will not affect houses without off-street parking.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling reacted to the news by emphasising the simplicity of charging cars at home: "Home charging provides the most convenient and low-cost option for consumers – you can simply plug your car in to charge overnight as you would a mobile phone."
My opinion about this is still very much sceptical, because even though it sounds like a good plan to normalise the presence of EVs, it's important to point out that trust in EVs is still very much low, so I think it would be a great idea of the government kept on investing in building more EV charging stations on highways and in cities.

What they don't realise is that 90%+ of them will sit useless bolted to the side of a house for several years when people still use engines.
Also has anyone considered the cost implication here? Housing is at a real premium at the moment and installing dormant EV chargers does nothing but make it worse.
When building a house, the marginal cost of a charging point is tiny. Maybe 60 to 100 quid.
100 quid? If I could buy new ones for £100 I would have made a multi-million pound business by now. Your looking at thousands for these things.
Heads up Aussies and Kiwis this is coming your way!
Really? Scomo would never employ this tactic. He'd just build another Hydrogen Valley instead. Maybe this could change after next years election though. Would be a smart tactic to hook outer suburbians into the EV market.
Exactly
Oh dear, more Boris bullshit. Has nobody learnt that when Boris opens his gob, it's only to utter lies and untruths? Not going to happen people. It's just a soundbite for rightwing consumption because of the climate conference in Scotland... which turned out to be a total waste of everyones time and money anyway.
Makes lots of sense, helps encourage EV adoption and is much cheaper to fit when the building is being built. Trivial impact on house price - the average house price in England is ~£270K, so the additional cost of a charger is about 0.2%
