Pole sitter Scott Dixon escapes unhurt after enormous Indy 500 crash
The Kiwi racer hit Jay Howard and was flipped up into the air before his car hit the inside wall
Scott Dixon walked away from a huge accident in the Indy 500 that saw his car completely destroyed after hitting another car on the famous oval.
The New Zealander had started the 101st running of the world's most famous race from pole position and was running well after the first round of pit stops when he came across a slower car.
Jay Howard had slowed to let a faster car through but ended up running wide and off the racing line. He hit the wall and his car was pushed back towards the in field.
Dixon arrived at speed and could do nothing as his car hit Howard and was flipped up into the air before crash landing on the inner wall and smashing into a thousand shards of carbon fibre.
And the onboard view from Dixon's car is even more frightening:
And this was the view from Hélio Castroneves' car, as the Brazilian miraculously managed to drive underneath Dixon's flying car.
Thankfully - incredibly - both drivers walked away unhurt from the incident and IndyCar officials have confirmed they have both been 'checked, cleared, and released'
In the race itself, Fernando Alonso has shown his class in the opening quarter of the race.
The Spaniard started fifth and was immediately dropped down to ninth in the opening laps before steadily pulling off overtake after overtake to lead the race by lap 40.
Alonso and Andretti team-mate Alexander Rossi then began working together, swapping the lead between them so they can save fuel for later in the race.
The race was red-flagged after the accident and the drivers will re-start the race from the pit lane.

This is a testament to the safety features of modern racing cars that both Drivers walked away without a scratch
Very true. Im glad safety has become so important because this racing is so dangerous.
