The German Car of the Year (GCOTY) awards is an annual competition held in Cologne, Germany, where expert members of a jury choose a winning car in five categories - compact, premium, luxury, new energy and performance. The winner of each category go on to a final voting round, where the jury makes a final decision on the overall car of the year.

The luxury car bracket is positioned for cars with a price tag of over 50,000 euros, and surprisingly, the winner this event goes to the Sino-Swedish marque Polestar. The near-unanimous vote meant that the car in question - the Polestar 2, convinced the jury "by a large margin", beating all other nominees including the Aston Martin DBX, BMW X6, Bentley Flying Spur, Corvette C8, Ferrari Roma, Ferrari SF90 Stradale, Ford Explorer, Land Rover Defender; and one other electric vehicle - the Tesla Model Y.

Jury members made their evaluation and final verdicts independently, making their decisions based on a number of criteria such as 'design, driving pleasure, drivetrain, handling, quality, comfort, practicality, safety, environment, infotainment, significance and price/performance ratio.'

Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, states that "it has always been our aim to bring more than just an electric alternative to the market, to develop a car that inspires customers with its design, innovation and performance... We are proud that the jury has recognised Polestar 2 in this way."

Taking out one of five categories, the Polestar 2 will go head-to-head with the winners of the compact, premium, new energy and performance categories in November.

  • Well done Vol...er, Polestar! The German manufacturers must be spitting feathers. I went for the Land Rover in your poll because I think it’s lovely.
