Police bodycam footage details police officers arriving at the scene of an incident at around 8:45am on Tuesday, August 11. Shared online by Youtube channel PoliceActivity, the officers in the video are presented with a man stuck motionless under a white Honda Civic after it appears that his car jack failed, trapping him half underneath.

Quick actions meant that the man was rescued from under the car in just over three minutes after police were first called. As shown in the footage, the officers lifted the car up while a neighbor pulled him out from under the Honda. The man remained motionless for a small period of time before finally regaining the momentum to sit up.

Paramedics and firefighters arrived shortly after, and luckily the man was fine. He's quite lucky, because the consequences may have been insurmountable if help had taken longer to arrive.

Let this be a good lesson to show how important jack stands and other fail safes are while working on the underside of a car. Again, I'll reiterate that this man is lucky, because people have been crushed and killed by failing car jacks in the past.

I personally usually use two jack stands when I'm working on a car in case the weight of a failed jack breaks a stand - and when working on the brakes or hub, I always place the wheel underneath the car as a further failsafe.

  • Good lesson, horribly learned. Always use well-made jack stands, people—your life can depend on it.

    • And NEVER buy them from harbor freight!

    • Harbor freight is as good or bad as anything else. All tools may fail, the question is, how quickly the seller reaches out to you with a recall

    • He was very lucky indeed/\. I had a distant relative who died in agony in the hospital three day after admission. Nice bloke and only 23 y.o. he was.

  • I was working on a car once, put it on a jack, took the wheel off. I didn't plan to work under the car, only needed to take off the wheel for a reason I don't remember.

Then I noticed something on the bottom of the car that I wanted to check out.

I was sitting there, deliberating whether I should reach under, for just a couple seconds, and I had just decided that I would, when at that precise moment - I kid you not - the jack collapsed. In my mind I was already reaching under the car, so it gave me a proper shock.

Jacks do collapse, it's not a hypothetical possibility. If you take a wheel off - put it under the car, even if you're not going under it yourself. At least then the car won't hit the ground hard.

  • Looks like his head was right around that void behind the engine block. Any further up or back and not sure he’d be alive. Also the beer gut may have helped a bit too! (Jokes are okay he’s still alive)
