Pop The Hatch: Honda Teases All-New 2022 Civic Hatchback
The all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback will debut on June 23rd, 2021 at 6 PM PDT.
In late April of 2021, Honda unveiled the all-new eleventh-generation Civic Sedan. Drawing inspiration from Civic models of the past, while introducing an evolutionary new design and new features, the new Civic promises to be the best Civic Honda has ever produced. However, Honda has so far only released the four-door Civic Sedan, and hasn't announced when the five-door Civic Hatchback will make its debut. Honda has finally announced that the all-new 2022 Civic Hatchback will be fully unveiled on June 23rd, 2021, just ahead of the start of the Honda-sponsored Civic Tour. Read on to find out what we know about the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback so far, as well as what we expect. NOTE: Any and all pricing discussed in this article includes a mandatory destination fee, but does NOT include any applicable taxes, or other fees.
Prior to the release of the all-new Honda Civic Hatchback for the 2017 model year, North America hadn't seen a Civic Hatchback since the discontinuation of the seventh-generation Civic Si in 2005. Needless to say, the all-new Civic Hatchback became an instant hit, and for 2018, Honda released the super high-performance Civic Type-R for the first time in North America. The all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback is expected to build on the success of the outgoing model, with sportier exterior styling than its four-door sedan counterpart. The interior is expected to be lifted directly from the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Sedan, but will feature an open cargo area instead of a trunk in the rear. Also unlike the Civic Sedan, a manual transmission is expected to be available on the Civic Hatchback.
Honda discontinued the Civic Coupe after the 2020 model year, as one of the last vehicles in its class. Since the Civic Coupe won't be returning for another generation, we expect that Honda will offer a high-performance Civic Si Hatchback that will compete directly with other "Hot Hatches", including the Hyundai Veloster N, Mazda 3 Turbo, and Volkswagen (VW) Golf GTI (the latter of which is due to be released in North America by the end of 2021). Due to the success of the Type-R model, Honda is also expected to release an all-new Civic Type-R, which will compete with the all-new Volkswagen (VW) Golf R. However, these models are likely to be released later in 2021, and Honda will likely only release the "Standard" Civic Hatchback at the all-new model's debut.
Power for the "Standard" all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback is likely to come in the form of the outgoing model's 1.5L Turbocharged "Earth Dreams" Inline Four-Cylinder (I4) gasoline engine producing 180 horsepower and 162 lb. ft. of torque, and is also shared with the all-new 2022 Civic Sedan. Like the Civic Sedan, a Continuously Variable Automatic (CVT) Transmission is likely to be available, although unlike the four-door sedan model, a six-speed manual transmission should be standard on most five-door hatchback models. Front Wheel Drive (FWD) is likely to be the only driveline option on all Civic Hatchbacks.
The all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback, like its four-door sedan counterpart, will introduce new features, such as an optional Bose premium audio system with an amplifier, more standard and optional safety equipment, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 360L. The trim level structure will likely be identical to the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Sedan, with base LX, mid-level Sport, well-equipped EX, and range-topping Touring (or in the Civic Hatchback's case, Sport Touring). The all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback will reach Honda dealerships nationwide by late 2021, and will compete with other entries in the segment, such as the Hyundai Veloster and Venue, the Kia Soul, the Mazda 3, the Subaru Impreza, and the Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Pricing is expected to range from around $24,000 for a base LX model, to about $30,000 for a fully loaded Touring (or Sport Touring) model.
