Porsche ownership is not a scary proposition. Yes, you need to service your car, but the service costs are not as bad as you would think. The key with all cars especially when they are over ten years old is regular maintenance and checks.
I have owned by first generation type 997 for two years in February. During the time of ownership I have had three services completed with no major issues. The 911 relatively speaking has been not that expensive to maintain for a sports car. In the future, cost may increase when brakes, clutch etcetera, have to be changed.
Maintenance cost are also correlated to how much you drive the car. My 911 is not a daily driver and is driven under 5,000 kms a year. Not the result of me not wanting to drive more but a result of work and a lot of travel.

Skimming the key Porsche forums you will come across many 997 owners who complete their own maintenance on their 911. This is not just oil changes, some owners change their brakes and other expensive parts to keep their running costs down. Not only that they enjoy getting to know their cars.
Porsche ownership is fun. Do not be scared of the running costs, the 911 haters (yes they exist) or the problems of each 911 generation. The 911 community is large and helpful and you will never be alone. Porsche Passion!
