Porsche 911 GT3: The car we are going to miss when everything goes electric
The boffins at Porsche have once again amazed us with the new 992 GT3
Being a news writer, as soon as a new car is released, I am found scampering through its press release for a headline figure. When the 911 (992) Porsche GT3 was revealed, there was one thing in the press release that stood out.
No matter who you are, as soon a new Porsche 911 GT3 is released you should be excited. For many years now the GT3 has been the benchmark for performance cars. Time after time Porsche has pushed the boundaries with the GT3. This time also the German brand has done the same.
Getting back to what I was talking about earlier, the one thing that stood out to me in the press release sent to me by Porsche was the car’s Nurburgring lap time. Now I am one of those persons who thinks that lap times don’t matter and at the end of the day, we are going to drive the car on the road and not on the track. But the GT3 has been the first car that has amazed me with its lap time around the ‘Ring.
This new GT3 is 17.5 seconds faster than the old car around the ‘Ring. SEVENTEEN AND A HALF SECONDS! In the car world, this is equal to a year. How can a new car be so much faster than its predecessor?!
You might be thinking that the lap time is thanks to increased power. But no, you are wrong because the GT3 produces only 10 horsepower more than the old one. This just shows how Porsche invests all its time in making the performance of the car better rather than giving it some absurd power figures.
Every year when Porsche releases the new GT3 nearly all of us think, “This is it then, the best GT3 ever made”. And then the German brand amazes all of us with the new car.
The fact that Porsche blessed this car with a naturally aspirated engine is quite phenomenal. Porsche says that the driver should enjoy the lovely noise from the engine rather than the exhaust. What this does is that the car doesn’t harm any polar bears with its emissions and still gives you the theatrical experience.
Petrolheads all over the world have a soft spot for the GT3 and it's not hard to see why. The car defines what perfect driver’s cars are made of and this GT3 is a whole lot more special. No, it's not because of its Nurburgring time or its new double wishbone suspension.
We are at a stage in the car world where we might not see cars like the GT3 again. Our world is set to be dominated by Teslas and Honda Es and Porsche Taycans. It might sound strange right now but our children might not even see cars like the GT3.
So savour it and enjoy it. If you are one of those persons with a huge bank balance then go and buy this new GT3. Chris Harris himself has said that you should buy this car if you have the money. We don’t know, maybe the 992 GT3 is the ultimate swansong of petrol-powered driver’s cars.
