Porsche Taycan beats Tesla Model S in Top Gear Test
Finally, the Tesla Model S Performance versus the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Dumb name aside the Porsche has quite a lot to prove here; it costs at least $100,000 more than a top-spec Model S, and arguably has the same performance. Thankfully, however, Top Gear have decided to settle this once and for all.
According to Top Gear’s testing, zero to 60 took the Taycan just 2.61 seconds, or seven thousandths quicker than the already "ludicrously"-quick Tesla, which put up quite the quarter-mile time. The Taycan, however, is a true “ten-second car,” rocketing through the quarter-mile in just 10.69 seconds—that’s nearly four-tenths of a second quicker than the Tesla.
There is of course much more to a car than just pure speed; the Taycan exhibits an elegance of handling which the Tesla simply cannot match. Furthermore, the Porsche has an interior which screams quality, and luxury. While, the Tesla has had a largely unchanged interior since the Model S first came out back in 2012.
However, while the Porsche does seem like the winner here it isn't all so simple. Because, if I were to actually live with one I'd have the Tesla. See, while Porsche have been making cars for the better part of a century, this is their first electric car.
The Model S just makes more sense; it's much much much cheaper, just as fast, and has one of the most sophisticated self-driving suites out there. However, by far the biggest strength of the Tesla is range; it can go a whopping 365 miles on one charge, while the Porsche can only achieve 279 miles. Furthermore, Tesla have built out the largest fast-charging network in the world, with well over 13,000 Tesla-exclusive chargers.
However, if you simply cannot bear the thought of owning a car which ever so slightly looses to the Porsche take a look at this. The new Tesla Model S Plaid edition, with 3 motors and a lap time record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife this new car promises to be truly incredible. It is going on sale in the spring of 2020, and should absolutely decimate the pricey Porsche Taycan.
