Porsche: There Is No Substitute

The 996 was the beginning of the liquid-cooled era. At the time the car was hated for its egg headlights and unreliable bearings.

The Porsche 911 might just be the greatest sports car that there has ever been. From its unique drivetrain layout too its fancy looks, all of the 911s never changed the principal because Porsche knew it was perfectly exquisite. The 996 generation was the end of an era. The air-cooled era, which was arguably the best, but the 996 is one of the greatest 911s ever built anyway.

This particular 996 is a Carrera Cabriolet model. It has RWD not AWD so you could get it sideways more easily. It is powered by a 3.4 L, naturally aspirated flat-6 that produces 296 horsepower and 258 lb ft of torque. Mated to the flat-6 is a 5-speed automatic transmission. The Cabriolet is heavier than the coupe, but can still propel from 0-60 mph in just 5.1 seconds and has a top speed of 174 mph, which is still a very strong figure. Especially when the 996 doesn't really make that much power. But because it is light and aerodynamic, it can perform very well. And looks good while it's doing it.

The 996 is possibly the most controversial Porsche ever. When it first arrived there was mixed feelings about the engine being liquid-cooled. Even though I prefer the air-cooled engines from the 911, I do believe it was time to move forward so that the 911 could keep up with other cars and competition. A problem arose with the engine of the 911. Inside it has a particular bearing that could break apart and it could lead to ultimate engine destruction. That does not happen with turbo models, only with the naturally aspirated 996 models. Although those were not the most controversial problems. Even though they make more sense to be. The most controversial problem was its looks. More specifically the egg shell headlights.

Porsche wanted to try something new with the design of the 911. They didn't want to leave the same principal, but wanted to update some characteristics. They chose to change the headlights. Sadly it did not work in their favor. I personally never was bothered by the headlights. I actually think they make the 996 look cool. And also never think a car is bad or better than another just because of looks. It is just not reasonable. There is way more to a car than just the dang looks. • My stepdad wants to sell his WRX for a 996 but he can’t find one that’s a decent price. His only criteria is that it has to be manual and not a convertible. Come on snobby Porsche collectors, I thought these were too ugly to ever be worth anything. What happened?….

    • Oh man! I hope he finds a good one. I think people have finally gotten over their complaints and realized how good of a drivers car it is.

    • I’ve always said that the 996 is going to age well. Specifically in regards to the styling. I just don’t like how fast classic car culture moves these days. It’s almost like people are just going around inflating prices out of nowhere…
