Portrait - Iceland´s ringroad

1,332 KILOMETERS - Usually open all year round

Since 1974, drivers have been able to easily circumnavigate Iceland on the country’s 1,332-kilometre ring road, known as Hringvegur, or Route 1. In winter, the drive around the island should not be underestimated: without all-wheel drive and snow chains, many passages prove impassable, and even the strongest headlamps are not much help in the eternal polar night.

Those eager to explore the volcanic landscape to the left and right of Route 1 should definitely check out the rental car category “monster trucks”. It’s no wonder this lunar landscape was used for the iciest scenes in the fantasy film “Game of Thrones”.

  • For some reason I want to drive on these roads always with cars that are not really made for them

  • Absolutely incredible experience, even in summer. Summer allows for darting off into more inland roads or trails and camping too!

  • Only drove the south section from Reykjavik to Hofn, but nowhere else I have driven has made me want to stop to take a photo every five minutes.

I look forward to going back with my family and completing the full loop.
