Power up: BMW gives local Z4 M40i a boost

BMW Australia delivers more power in 2020 for Z4 M40i roadster.

BMW has ramped up the performance of its Z4 M40i roadster for 2020, which now produces a whopping 285kW, helping deliver a stunning 4.1-second 0-100km/h standard sprint time.

The 35kW power boost for the 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine aligns the Z4 M40i with fellow M Performance models, the M340i xDrive, X3 M40i and X4 M40i, which feature the same version of the TwinPower Turbo straight six power plant.

The Z4 combines focused driving performance with an extroverted exterior styling package designed by Australian Calvin Luk. It also features an engaging and high quality interior matched with an electrically-operated soft top roof.

A 50:50 weight distribution, wider track, shorter wheelbase and rear-wheel-drive contribute to a highly sporty drive while evoking iconic characteristics of the car that inspired it – the legendary BMW Z8.

The entry point to the range, the Z4 sDrive20i, features a 2.0-litre turbocharged four- cylinder petrol engine that produces 145kW and 320Nm. It can also be optioned with a six-speed manual transmission to add further enthusiast appeal.

Priced at $84,900 plus on-roads, regardless of the transmission choice, achieves the standard sprint in 6.6 seconds. The Z4 sDrive 30i, with a tuned version of the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, delivers 190kW and 400Nm.

It enables a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds and is priced at $104,900 plus on-roads. The good news for M40i purchasers is that despite the substantial update, there’s no price increase, with the Z4 M40i remaining at $124,900 plus on-roads. Prices are Australian dollars.
