Quirky Sports Cars We Are Missing In India

A small 2 seat sports car is something that every Indian want to get his hands on when the sun is shining bright and cool wind is felt in the air. But unfortunately, some of the greatest manufacturers don’t have a sale here.
I’m not going deep into the technical specifications for these cars.

1. Mazda MX-5 (Miata)

Although many aren’t aware, or maybe you are, Mazda does have a trade in India but it isn’t what you think it is. The Japanese manufacturer has buses and trucks rolling coal on the roads, but refuse to sell some cars.
The small rotary engine gives the car a good punch down the line for some open air experience.

You may find the occasional MX-5 or RX-8 on the road, but that is also limited in the amount of cities that they’re found in, or the number of people that actually take the pain of importing them.! This leads to watch the Rotary end of the spectrum scream, while some think they it still sounds like a dentist’s drill. They have the right amount of power and ground clearance to roam around Indian streets.

2. Nissan 350/370Z (Fairlady)

Unlike Mazda, Nissan does have a market in India, but following Mazda’s tail, doesn’t sell a small 2 seat sports car. This leads to a lot of turmoil.

Packing a solid punch, the Fairlady, is a good pick for the beginning car enthusiast. It’s got the power, the looks and the nice drivability. Adding to this, this is also a car that’s loved by tuners, like every Fast & Furious movie ever showed, Well the earlier ones sure did.!
The lack of some proper sports cars really hits us petrolheads sometimes.!
Even if you do manage to find a good one, which you can count on your fingers, it is going to be a big dent to your pocket. Someone else might as well say you could’ve gone for an entry level Merc or Audi, but they don’t understand us petrolheads do they.?!?

3. Fiat 500

Probably not what someone’s expecting on the list, but here goes to one of the best cars to have possibly existed for the Indian market. It’s small, fun to drive, and well, it’s small. Which makes it fun to drive in India’s tightly packed roads.

If you’re aware of the Indian car market, Fiat is famous for making its Premier, a car that’s well known among Indian car enthusiasts. Fiat also has a bunch of other cars, but fails to achieve the beauty of the 500. There’s also, some other cars that Fiat makes, and for some reason, they lack charm. The charm that gave the Premier the best part of the Indian motoring history.

4. Honda S2000

One thing that is similar to all the cars on this list is that, they all have been manufacturers that make cars in India. Honda, for example, makes pretty decent cars when it comes to the Indian car market with the CR-V coming in clutch, providing a good SUV in the segment.

But like Fiat, Honda had come into the market with a sedan called the City and it was a hit for the tuners which wasn’t even the best of the bunch. For someone, who likes to muffler deletes and put on some body mods, the City provided a perfect base.
But unfortunately, one of the best cars that Honda made, the S2000, wasn’t made available in India. It would’ve been one of the best cars to be a starters car which would also be, a very tuner-friendly car. Spoon is a company that’s known for making amazing car parts, and majority of them being performance parts, this would result in a good variety of cars that could roam the streets among the enthusiasts.

5. Toyota MR2

Toyota has gotten a couple of MR2’s into India. The famous movie, which DC creations is famous for, Taarzan- The Wonder Car, it was featured as the car which the actress drove, and it did indeed build a perfect look to the car.

With its decently powerful engine, and by powerful, I mean, powerful enough for the Indian roads, it would also be a good car to be a part of the car community. That’s all I got for this one.

6. Honda Integra Type- R

Similar time the MR-2, the Type-R is also a famous pick for those enthusiasts who want a quick bang for the buck. This, similar to the S2K, offers brilliant parts which help it perform better. It’s a shame that the Indian market is missing out on these kinds of cars.

The type R provides a good base for the first timers, and also is brilliant for veterans to tune. An all round good car and nothing else can be told about the car.

Honourable Mention
Volkswagen Golf

There’s nothing I can write about the golf. It’s an all rounder good car. But if Volkswagen India is reading this, decrease the price of the car and people will buy it.

  • Great read, just one thing, the MX-5 never came with a rotary. They came with inline 4s, early ones 1.6-1.8 and 2.0 in newer models.

  • You forgot to add GT86. It is available in neighbouring countries like bangladesh, but not here.
