NIGHTSHIFT BIKES JUST FINISHED ITS NEWEST BUILD: THE R888 MK001. IN 3 WEEKS, WE WENT FROM A FLOODED 1973 BMW R75/5 TO A FULLY ELECTRIC SCRAMBLER.

We started with a 1973 R75 that had been flooded in Hurricane Katrina.
Most of the bike was unusable, but we salvaged the rear swingarm, frame, and some parts of the rear suspension and front fork.
As we filled in the rest of the bike, every design decision we made was with the original bike in mind.
We emulated the original gas tank, but filled it with electrical components.
Instead of running a mechanical driveshaft through the BMW's iconic swing arm, we ran wires.
We used a hub motor whose shape paid homage to the original drum brakes.
And a wood seat. Sustainable!
You can see here we kept the front drum brake– this new bike is light enough that a drum brake in front and regenerative braking in back is enough– Although we still might upgrade to disks for better performance.
Nadav checking alignment. It's good!
Liam feeling it out.

The R888 was designed for bumpy New Orleans streets.

  • Matt, dude I swear I'm gonna find some time to make is down your way in the near future. I start my build for my electric in a few months, I'm gathering resources now and selling the ICE components until then.

  • Great work, guys. You should throw some leds in the tank to show it off at night!

  • Ok lets stop it. Unless batteries become lighter, last longer and quicker to charge there is nothing in these bikes

  • Matt, as said before, it looks very very VERY cool ! Come and join me on the next Electric Night Ride I'm organising ! This time not in Belgium but in Switzerland on 1 July. I'd be over the moon, and Carbu Diem photographer will be there for the eternal images. (though you're doing a pretty good photographer's job too, I must say...!)
