Rally Car of the Week #19

$300,000 too much for a WRC Subaru? Well, this week I can help!

You may have noticed that, yesterday, I reposted an article about a Subaru Impreza WRC that recently sold for $300,000. It was a former Prodrive test car, resplendent in the iconic 555 livery and, as chassis number 001, it was always going to make good money. However, it doesn't have to cost that much to own a pukka WRC Subaru.

This week, I present to you another late '90s Impreza from the Prodrive stable; currently on the market for a very reasonable €115,000. That's about £100,000 or, to look at it another way, less than half the cost of the auction car.

This car isn't quite as original as the other one, but looks to have all the right bits; with the engine, transmission and suspension all on relatively low miles (very important, as rebuild costs are not exactly bargain basement). The dampers are Reiger, which I don't believe is what they would have been originally, but they are by no means a poor man's alternative.

Being a '99 car, you don't get the sequential gearbox of later WRC machines, but you still get active differentials and almost 340bhp under your right foot. Yes, you can buy a hot hatch with more than that these days, but how many hot hatches have 482Nm....oh, and water-cooled AP Racing brakes?

Putting money and spec aside for a moment, is this the best looking WRC car ever created? I think so. And, being a less original car means you don't have to worry so much about preserving it for a museum so, provided you can afford the monumental running costs, it's in prime condition to get out there and terrorise the stages.
