Rally Car of the Week Part 13

Unlucky for some, but not if you like a Subaru.

After a brace of front-wheel drive cars, it's time to return to a rallying staple this week; in the shape of this Subaru Impreza. I had found a nice entry-level car that would have been perfect for a rallying newbie, but it disappeared before I got the chance to put this page together. I was a bit put-out by that, but then this lovely example popped up, so I thought I would go for something a bit less entry level and a bit more competitive.

While it isn't as cheap as my original sub-£10k choice, you can be safe in the knowledge that this car was probably put together properly, as it was built by well-known Subary fettlers, Teg Sport. It's based around the desirable two-door Type-R body shell and looks to have a rather nice T45 roll cage, lightweight panels and under-floor guards. The fuel system also looks like a professional job with lots of aerospace-type hoses. This stuff isn't cheap, so hopefully it's a sign that this is not a budget build where corners have been cut.

Like the fuel system that feeds it, the engine also looks to have plenty of tasty bits, with forged pistons, stronger connecting rods, modified cylinder heads and a bigger, front-mounted intercooler. While it won't have the pace of a WRC car, that motor is still knocking out a claimed 335bhp, which it puts down to the ground through a Modena dog-engagement gearbox. Make no mistake, this is likely to be a potent car in the right hands.

While £20k is hardly cheap, it's a fraction of what it would cost you to buy a pukka Group A or WRC Impreza. I think you'd struggle to go faster for this budget, making this Scoob seem something of a bargain to these eyes.

  • front mounts are silly on Subarus. can get plenty of power from the top mount with a good management system and better injectors slash turbo.
