Perhaps the axle housing was slightly bent? A hot weld like that will cool and shrink and "pull" the axletube in the direction of the weld. If you don't have access to alignment bars when doing axle welding it's possible that the welding of brackets, etc will warp the axlettubes and prevent you from getting axleshafts installed... or will at least put a lot of side-load on the bearings and wear everything out quicker..... Just a thought.
