Range-topping Porsche Cayenne Coupe is actually faster than the 997 911 Turbo
It actually lapped the Nürburgring in just 7:38.925
Two years ago I was given the opportunity to test drive the (then) all-new Cayenne Coupe and I liked it a lot. It's faster and better-looking than the Cayenne and more comfortable than the Macan without being excessively cumbersome. We all know Porsche know how to make fast SUVs but as it turns out, the Cayenne Coupe Turbo is actually faster than the 997 911 Turbo around the Nürburgring.
A few days ago, Porsche went to the 'Ring with a Cayenne Coupe, their test driver Lars Kern and a... notary public because they wanted to set a new record in the 'SUV, off-road vehicle, van, pick-up' category and, well, they did just that.
Kern lapped the famed Nordschleife (20.832 km) at the Nürburgring in just 7:38.925, faster than the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, the Porsche 997 911 Turbo (7:39), and faster than the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera LP570-4 (7:40.760). That's impressive. Kern has been test driving Porsches for ages, he knows the brand and he knows the track, and he said the car's "high steering precision and stoically stable rear axle" gave him the confidence he needed, especially "in the Hatzenbach section".
The world record was set at 11:31 on 14 June 2021 with an outside temperature of 23°c and a track temperature of 46°c degrees, using 22-inch Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres specifically designed for the Cayenne Coupe and available for the production vehicle.
