Ranked - The 13 coolest supercars of the '90s

20w ago

Oasis, Power Rangers, Pokémon, Limp Bizkit and bad fashion. These are just a few things that made the '90s special. However, there is one thing that sticks out in my mind when I think back to my first 10 years on this earth and it is supercars.

I was spoilt for choice being born in 1989. Supercars were getting more and more ridiculous and it was the start of the 'anything you can do I can do better' phase. There wasn't enough space on my bedroom wall to accommodate them all.

I've plucked my favourite lucky 13 supercars from my favourite era and ranked them in the mindset of my 10 year old self.

13) Panoz Esperante GTR-1

Whenever I mention '90s supercars and forget to mention the Panoz, all the Americans lose their shit. Well here you go, it is in at number 13. I have to admit, it does look pretty epic.

12) Lamborghini Diablo

El Diablo. Never has there been a more appropriate name than 'The Devil' for the quite mental Lamborghini.

11) Lotus Esprit V8

Slap a V8 in a very light frame and you have the British beast, the Lotus Esprit. In various forms over the years, but it never looked better than the '90s.

10) Honda NSX

Often overlooked in terms of 'cool factor' but does it get much cooler than a Japanese Ferrari… that doesn't break down? Also, the one pictured is the Alex Zanardi edition just to slap on another layer of cool.

9) Jaguar XJR 15

Certainly not the last Jaguar on the list. It maybe a bit forgotten, but it doesn't deserve that treatment in the slightest. It also had a nice little 6.0-litre V12.

8) Bugatti EB110

I've recently called it a bit ugly in the article below, but that doesn't take any cool points away from it. I actually had one on my bedroom wall for a good few years.

7) Lister Storm

I first saw this in 1997 when I went to watch the 24 hour race at Silverstone. It was the race that got me hooked on motorsport and confirmed my petrolhead status and in a field of unbelievable racing cars, the Lister Storm still stands out as one of my favourites.

6) Jaguar XJ220

The second Jaguar on the list and a pretty worthy one. My first model car was the Jaguar XJ220, so I have a particular affinity with it.

5) Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR

Oh man, now we are starting to get to the proper filth. To me, Mercedes made some of the best and reliable road cars in the world. Then, out of nowhere, they go and release this. It is utterly bonkers. I recently interviewed Peter Dumbreck who famously managed to flip one backwards at high speed.

4) Ferrari F50 GT

If you've read any of my posts, you may have picked up that I am a massive Ferrari F50 fan. Now, add a little GT-ness into the mix and you have near perfection.

3) McLaren F1

Do I need to say anything about this car? I'll let the photo do the talking.

2) Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion

The Porsche 911 was cool. The Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion is biblically cool. End of story.

1) Dauer 962 Le Mans

Some of you may think I'm cheating here as this is based on the '80s Porsche 962 racing car, but Dauer built a small amount of these to be street legal in 1994 so they could take it to Le Mans. It just is the coolest supercar of the '90s. Period.

Do you think I've got the list spot on, or have I missed the mark?

What do you consider to be the coolest supercar of the naughty '90s? Let me know in the comments.
