Reading a copy of a leading newspaper, and first page rambles on about the Prime Minister who was present in my city for a certain even. Then, something caught my eye. A foreign firm, you may have heard of it - Virgin - inks a plan with the state to build a Mumbai-Pune 'hyperloop', effectively a passenger pod levitating on magnetic tracks and cruising at high speeds. As I read on, my face fell. Though the pods are going to float at a cool 1,000km/h, it means a Mumbai-Pune run will be done in 20 minutes. The pods float in near vacuum and specially constructed tracks and infrastructure. Ambitious plans for the service to be running by 2025. It's great news. And an airport for Navi Mumbai too. I should be happy, shouldn't I? Except that I don't want to do a twenty minute ride to Pune. Call me selfish, or old fashioned - but I like two hours of motoring down the best road, in India, period. It's risky, and polluting, time consuming and you can give me more reasons to dissuade me from this endeavour. But being driven down is a great experience. Because I love cars a lot. And at the end of the day, even real car guys like the ones I grew up admiring (Sirish, Bert, Vikrant Singh you aren't yet forgotten), too love driving cars when part of car magazines. With new driver-less transport schemes, will people be allowed to drive their own cars?. If a person is said to love driving, he is said to be a freedom lover. The Mumbai-Pune run is an expression of freedom - and when I undertook part of it, even though as a passenger, I felt free. Be it the once a year Imagica dash, or the indulgent getaway to Lonavala or Ratnagiri. It is like a symphony orchestra. Rubber thrumming on concrete, and if you have good music, you might achieve nirvana. The same freedom I feel when I cruise down the Sion-Panvel highway, or Palm Beach, only times personified. A life with love and a family is said to be a good life. A guy's life without a good drive? Clearly you haven't yet lived. Yes there are a few idiots, and unfortunate incidents with loss of life and machine. But it only motivates us - to build a stronger, faster and safer India. One that is experienced best: through a car. Seatbelts first
