Early this year, Morgan announced that the production of their flagship Plus 8 model will end along with the utilization of the naturally aspirated BMW V8 in their cars. That end also marked a new beginning as the company hinted us with a completely new sports car, and recently, some details have made their way to the Autocar website including the car's internal name and a few other details.
Internally the car is know as the 'Wide Body' and the production car's name is most likely to change like the McLaren BP23's (Speedtail's) name did. This car will be very special for Morgan as it celebrates the 110 anniversary of the company and will also mark the end of the V8 era. In addition, the aluminium chassis will be substantially stiffer than previous models and the new sports car will be the most dynamic car ever made by Morgan.
At the end of the video above, Morgan dropped a Christmas present for people who were left wondering about the engine that will be used The engine note is very familiar, especially if you spend your day watching videos of the BMW M4's and RS5's engine note. So it's most likely a turbocharged six-cylinder engine which makes sense. Less emission and a decent amount of power.
The new model will slot between the Roadster, Plus 4 and 4/4 and the Plus 8 model as the British firm clearly stated that the new car will not be a direct replacement for the Plus 8 or Aero 8. More interestingly, the company has future plans for a flagship model to replace these models. Although we don't know when exactly to expect them, but I definitely can't wait!
Graham Chapman, Morgan's technology director described the 'Wide Body' project as a "Culmination of several years of unprecedented development in design and engineering for Morgan. This has produced the most advanced development programme in Morgan's history, the results of which we cannot wait to share with our customers worldwide." Let's hope it will be as good as we think it is.
