Redesigning an Icon: Honda Unveils Redesigned 2022 Civic Si Sedan
While the all-new Honda Civic Si makes less power than its predecessor, it's more well-equipped and sportier than ever.
When Honda unveiled the all-new, eleventh-generation 2022 Civic Sedan earlier this year, we were disappointed that it wouldn't offer a manual transmission option. While the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback offers a manual transmission, we were still holding out for Honda to unveil the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si Sedan, and the wait is finally over: Honda has finally unveiled the next version of its performance sedan. Even though it loses power for 2022, the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Sedan is still more well-equipped and sportier than the model it replaces. Read on to find out more about the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si Sedan. NOTE: Any and all pricing discussed in this article includes a mandatory destination fee, but does NOT include any applicable taxes, or other fees.
Starting with the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si Sedan's exterior, the front end gets a unique styling treatment that includes sporty black upper and lower front grilles (the upper front grille features an 'Si' emblem), as well as Gloss Black-painted front fog lamp bezels to help differentiate it from its standard Civic Sedan counterpart. Completing the sporty appearance are darkened front headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lamps (DRL's), and there are also Gloss Black-painted exterior side mirror caps, as well as Gloss Black-finished aluminum wheels to add to the Si's sporty appearance. In the rear, you'll find a sporty dual-tipped exhaust system, as well as a Gloss Black-finished rear trunk lid wing spoiler, and the 'Si' emblem on the rear trunk lid. Overall, the Civic Si features a sporty appearance that's sure to turn heads.
Moving into the interior of the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si Sedan, you'll find a unique interior that's trimmed in a two-tone black-and-red mesh cloth material that also includes matching inserts in the front and rear door panels, and Gloss Black interior accent trim that's highlighted in red, as well as red stitching throughout the Si's sporty interior. The front bucket seats are more bolstered than the seats in the standard Civic Sedan, as well as firmer for better support. A reconfigurable full-color Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) LCD display allows the driver to keep tabs on performance specifics, as well as other important information. What's more, the Civic Si's interior comes loaded with plenty of standard technology features, which we'll get into later in this article.
Under the hood, the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si Sedan is powered by the same turbocharged 1.5L Inline Four-Cylinder (I4) gasoline engine that produces 200 horsepower and 192 lb. ft. of torque. That's less power than the previous-generation Civic Si's 1.5T I4 gasoline engine (which produced 205 horsepower, but the same amount of torque at 192 lb. ft.), but that torque curve now comes at 300 RPM's sooner than the previous model, which still allows the all-new Civic Si to be as quick as its predecessor. Mated to that engine is a traditional six-speed manual transmission, and that transmission includes a rev-matching system that has a response time of 430 milliseconds (430 m/s) as the 2021 Honda Civic Type-R Hatchback, thanks to a 30-percent decrease in inertia and 26 lb. weight reduction for the clutch. If the driver prefers, the rev-matching mode of the manual transmission may be switched off if the driver prefers to shift on their own with no intervention from the system. As mentioned before, there's a new dual-tipped exhaust system that provides a sporty note due to a 27-percent exhaust flow increase from the Civic Sedan 1.5T Touring's dual exhaust system. The six-speed manual transmission also allows for ten percent shorter throws for improved shifting. With an eight percent increase in torsional rigidity and a thirteen percent increase in bending rigidity, the all-new Civic Si handles better than its predecessor, and spring rates are eight percent stiffer up front and 54-percent stiffer in the rear as well. To help stop the all-new Civic Si, 12.3-inch (12.3") front disc brake rotors and 11.1-inch (11.1") rear disc brake rotors are larger than their counterparts on the previous-generation Civic Si. Finally, there are three different driving modes (Normal and Sport, as well as a customizable Individual Mode) that allow the driver to fine-tune the Civic Si to their driving style.
As mentioned before, the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si comes loaded with plenty of standard equipment. We've already mentioned the 1.5L Turbocharged Inline Four-Cylinder (I4) gasoline engine and six-speed manual transmission with a rev-matching system, but there's also sport brake and suspension systems and a three-mode driving mode selector to add to the Si's high-performance driving experience. To help keep the driver on course, there's a full suite of Honda Sensing driver assistance technologies, and like every Honda, an Advanced Compatibility Engineering ("ACE") Body Structure and ten total standard airbags ensure a safe ride for all five passengers. The interior includes sport accents and a two-tone color scheme, and to keep the driver and their passengers entertained, there's a nine-inch (9.0") Honda Link touchscreen infotainment system with SiriusXM Satellite Radio (including a paid trial subscription), wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, full Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio, GPS navigation, and HD Traffic, all fed through a twelve-speaker Bose premium amplified audio system for a high-quality listening experience. Like before, the Civic Si remains Front Wheel Drive (FWD)-based.
The all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si Sedan will reach Honda dealerships nationwide in late 2021. The original Honda Civic Si was released in 1986, and was based on the two-door hatchback Civic. Honda hasn't yet announced pricing for the all-new 2022 Civic Si Sedan, but the 2020 Honda Civic Si Sedan started at $25,200 without any additional options, and we expect the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si Sedan to retain similar pricing, with only a slight increase. An all-new Honda Civic Type-R should follow the Civic Si Sedan soon to complete the all-new Civic lineup. What do you think of the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Si Sedan? I cannot fathom the thinking that leads to the Si package being available only on the sedan. Is not a hatchback considered "sportier?" So if I want all the fun handling stuff, I have to accept the longer wheelbase and crappy little slit of a trunk opening instead of a nice hatch? So if I want a hot hatch out of Honda I have pay $40 grand for the "R" with the go-to-jail whale tail spoiler on it and look like a 22-year old spoilt child? No thank you, Honda.
