Relax with JLR’s amazing new mood sensing tech – which could also save your life
In today’s society, we hear the words mental health being mentioned more and more. In fact, according to Mental Health UK, a worrying 74 per cent of the British population admits to feeling stressed or overwhelmed on a daily basis.
In an attempt to combat this shocking figure, Jaguar Land Rover is developing new AI technology that will understand the driver’s mood. The technology uses a driver-facing camera that detects the changes in the driver’s face and attitude. It combines the data from the camera to data from a biometric sensor.
Once the AI has gathered up all the information, it will then change the cabin settings accordingly. The system could change variables such as the temperature via the air conditioning unit and the interior colour. Different playlists can also be selected based the driver’s apparent mood. Eventually, the AI system will be able to create preselected settings for the driver’s different moods.
The same technology is being trialled for passengers in the rear of the car using a camera fixed to the front seat’s headrest. However, with less responsibilities, passengers would get the chance to sleep thanks to the system. When it senses tiredness, the system could dim the interior light and raise the temperature.
As it is, the newly developed tech seems somewhat gimmicky. However, there is definitely a use for it in preventing crashes. In fact, one in eight drivers in the UK have admitted to falling asleep at the wheel according to Fleet News. The AI system could prevent the driver from falling asleep just as easily as it eases passengers asleep. If the system detects a drowsy driver, all that would be necessary is a brighter cabin and cooler temperatures.
