Remembering That Time James May Wrapped an XR2i for Christmas
Although the resultant episode wasn’t broadcast at Christmas (the beginning of February 2014, as it happened), and it certainly wasn’t billed as a Top Gear Christmas Special, the first episode of Series 21 of Top Gear did – briefly – offer a festive interlude. Courtesy of the most unlikely of quarters, too.
Tasked with wrapping their nostalgia fest-rejoicing 1990s hot hatches in what the presenters believed to be appropriate, well, 90s car graphics themes, James opted for a somewhat original take on the genre. By covering his Ford Fiesta XR2i in festive gift wrap, much to Messrs Clarkson and Hammond’s subsequent derision/ridicule.
Now, to my mind, there’s something quite appealing about Captain Slow’s interpretation of 90s car wraps. Not to mention, suitably urine-extracting when recalling the actual state many of the Max Power generation would go about ‘customising’ their luke-warm hatchbacks during that instantly forgettable chapter in contemporary car-modding.
Anyway, here’s wishing one and all of Drivl’s readers, a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year; whatever you choose to drive. And I can only imagine some of the horrors sitting on driveways across this planet we all affectionately call home. Well, some of us….
