Renault 5 Returns As The Ultimate Electric Supermini
The production version of this lovely concept will launch in less than three years from now
Renault has unveiled the electric 5 concept and no, this isn't an outlandish but forward-thinking crystal ball concept. The French car maker has confirmed that we will see the production version of this concept in less than three years from now.
The original 5 was a cult classic and Renault has made sure that this new electric supermini resembles its grandad. “The design of the Renault 5 Prototype is based on the R5, a cult model of our heritage. This prototype simply embodies modernity, a vehicle relevant to its time: urban, electric, attractive", says Renault design chief Gilles Vidal.
Eagle-eyed readers will see that the front and rear lights and the pillars are a modernized version of those found in the original 5.
What's more, the wider rear wheel arches and livery along with the super-cool wheels give us hints of the cult classic rally homologation special 1980 5 Turbo. Renault have also claimed that there will be a hotter Alpine version of the electric 5. Lovely.
The charging port is located on the front of the car. With the electric 5 set to be be based on a new platform, it will have a slim battery that will boast quick charging.
Renault hasn't released any interior images or technical specs as of now. We expect them to be revealed in the coming months.

I really love this, and its electric, which is really surprising, I might have to bend my "never to drive a roadgoing EV ever" rule a bit, it's certainly better than the Model X Scuttlebug...
Not bad at all. Even though i don’t like EV’s this one is pretty cool.
I'm not a big fan of electric cars, but this one is really great! I'm looking forward to the R5 and Alpine A110e!
Isn’t this just a Zoe in drag?
Next gen zoe i think. That and they have an alpine version so they say.
100% agree. The Renault 5 is trying to be Renaults halo model since there is nothing aspirational in the range, they couldn’t make alpine into it which says it all.
Right now, nobody aspires to a Renault or even a Zoe (Megan’s trophy R maybe...
