This has come as a surprise to all of us...

It has been announced today on Monday, that the Team Principal of Renault F1 Team, Cyril Abiteboul is leaving Formula 1 and Renault effective immediately. It was expected that Cyril's role in the team might have been changed due to the new rebranding of the Alpine team. Yet, it has been announced instead of taking a new role, Cyril Abiteboul is departing and leaving Formula 1 and Renault F1 Team. A very big surprise to all of us indeed...

Since the news of the Frenchmen's withdrawal has been released, it is confirmed that Marcin Budkowski will take up Abiteboul's position as team principal in the Alpine F1 Team. Renault or bound Alpine is starting on a fresh new foot, resulting in many members changing their roles and many new people being appointed to the job. It was expected that Cyril would have changed his role, yet the former team boss has resigned his job immediately from Formula 1. We do not know Cyril's future plans, nothing has been stated so far.

Abiteboul spoke on the situation by closing off and thanking the team...

"I would like to thank the Groupe Renault for having trusted me for many years, particularly with the relaunch and reconstruction of the team since 2016."

This has come as a surprise for all Formula 1 fans, it was thought that the Frenchmen would just change his specific role in the team. Yet, Cyril has decided that he will leave Formula 1 completely, and we respect his decision fully. He has been a major part of the Renault F1 Team and Formula 1 in general.

Following the news today it has also been announced that Laurent Rossi will replace Renault F1 Team's CEO Luca de Meo as CEO of Alpine. Many roles are being replaced between the new team.

Cyril Abiteboul has been a very significant and important part of the Renault team. Cyril joined and began working for the French Team in 2007. In 2010, he became and took the position of executive director in the team. Then Cyril Abiteboul joined Caterham in the year 2012, became Caterham's team principal, and then departed and left in 2014.

He returned to Formula 1 in 2016 and was a key role in Renault's team and success in the past years. As you can see Cyril has been with the team for a while, he has helped them through all their struggles and highs. The past 2020 season has been Renault's best in a while, and he knows that he has left F1 and the French team on a good path.

  • I am surprised that so many changes are being made to the team, given that I originally thought it was just a rebranding. At least we'll get to see if Squirrel Irritable was actually a hindrance or not.

  • I am not really surprised. Cyril was looking like he was under pressure and didn't deliver the performances that were expected

    • I agree! This year he did well, 2019 he definitely underperformed, i’m surprised but not too surprised

  • Not good for Alpine with Ricardo and Cyril (I can’t spell his last name) leaving but at least they’ll have Alonzo back

    • Yeah, we will see how Alpine will turn out this year. Ricciardo has moved to Mclaren and now we will see how Alonso will perform with the Alpine team
