Reputation is everything: the 2021 Audi A4 35 TFSI

Building on years of reputation is one thing manufacturers usually get right. Not always, but mostly they do. The 2021 Audi A4 35 TFSI certainly does.

With a starting price of around $63,000 drive away, it also sits below the luxury car tax threshold in Australia, making the front wheel drive sedan a solid proposition. Never mind how well styled it is, or the comfort it delivers.

The 35 TFSI comes with a 2.0-turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, coupled to a 7-speed DCT and a 12-volt mild hybrid motor. Putting out 110kW and 270Nm of torque, its definitely no power house, at least off the line.

But once it works its way up through the gears, you’ll find the power to be adequate enough to overtake, when you need to. Paddle shifters also give you a little more control over the power delivery too.

If you're looking for a tonne of power, there's a 45 TFSI Quattro model ready and waiting. But we're not here to talk about that variant, the 35 TFSI is where it's at for a comfortable, cruisy ride. Fuel economy is a reasonable 7.5-litres/100km too (tested).

It looks fantastic, inside and out, with the latter offering a real saloon car feel. It rides on 19-inch Audi Sport wheels, and features LED headlights and taillights, with aluminium highlights at various points on the outside of the luxury sedan.

Inside, we were almost nervous to spill a crumb of your favourite snack, for fear that it would take away from the A4's beauty. Leather appointed trim features, with a power adjustable driver's seat that sports 4-way lumbar support.

The dash offers the perfect mix of functionality and form, and there's enough buttons at your figure tips to quickly and easily control what you need, without feeling like you are powering up a Boeing 747.

When it comes to visuals you'll also be graced with a 10.1-inch infotainment unit that provides satellite navigation, the usual suspects of phone functionality, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's also wireless phone charging.

It has an 8-speaker sound system and DAB+ digital radio too. Three zone deluxe climate control will also help you find that just right temperature, and the instrument cluster's digital centre display also provides plenty of important information at a glance.

This means you don't have to take your eyes away from the job of watching the road, and driving. Should you get in trouble, Audi's Pre-Sense City safety system is onboard, including autonomous emergency braking, with pedestrian detection.

Audi's parking system plus is also present, along with hold assist, cruise control, a rear view camera and lane change warning. Handling and comfort are as they should be too, in the A4 35 TFSI, thanks to sports suspension, and Audi's drive select capabilities.

It's comfortable for the long road trips, but nimble enough to dart through peak hour traffic, and hug those turns on twisty back roads. The Audi A4 is literally a perfect case of having your cake and eating it too.

It's a car that's all about the quality of the experience, rather than any concern about having a tonne of power under your right foot. The 2021 Audi A4 delivers a relaxed experience that's second to none.

It's available in Brilliant Black, Ibis White, Floret Silver Metallic, Glacier White Metallic, Manhattan Grey Metallic, Mythos Black Metallic, Navarra Blue Metallic, Tango Red Metallic and Terra Grey Metallic.

Audi also offers an optional Driver Assistance package, that adds adaptive cruise, active lane assist, pre-sense front collision protection, collision avoidance assist, high beam assist, and turn assist.
