RESTORING AN ICON.

So... the Escort MK II... a car which in many peoples eyes symbolizes rally of a by gone age.... and also my daily driver.

No... seriously I'm not joking! This is my 1978 Ford Escort MK II 1600 4 door. Currently in a rather 70's looking purple! What can I say about this car in the time I've had her? Well, shes got a personality that I've never experienced with a car. Almost testing me as a new comer to the motoring world.

I wish I was being humorous when I say I haven't got my licence yet... yup! I am the co-host of a car series and can't drive... go on, get all the jokes out your system now... I'm waiting...

I bought this little gem from a rather lovely gentleman in wales who clearly didn't want to depart with it. I picked her up for a tidy price of £3,600 with a spare Kent 1600 xflow engine (It's got a 1300 in her currently purely for insurance purposes.... STOP LAUGHING IN THE BACK)

The first thing I did was clean up the engine! Below is two comparison shots of the before and after. Engine rocker cover resprayed, metal cleaned and polished as well as the engine bay (well parts I can do without lifting the engine) re-primed and sprayed.

Just because there's currently a 1300 in the car doesn't mean it doesn't make a nice noise...

Thanks Bentley for the video... I appreciate your face.

I expect that when the 1600 engine is dropped in, it should sound rather beefy like its rally counter part. Which in many respects is rather fitting due to the fact that I do eventually intend in partaking in historic road rally's! I always have been a massive fan of rally... in reality its what got me into cars in the first place... back in a time when Colin McRae ruled the dirt tracks! It inspired me to be where I am today with my Escort!

The interior is in pretty good nick too! Considering its age, I was expecting ripped seats and the smell of a dead cat embedded into the material... when in fact... it was the complete opposite! I of course couldn't help myself but polish up all the interior so that it looks new again but aside that, its in great condition! I also love the addition of the OMP racing wheel. Thank you to Josh, the previous owner for that one as well as the straight through exhaust system.

Don't mind the 1600 engine on the seat...

All in all I've got myself a very nice car for the price, and I shall treasure it dearly... but there are exciting times ahead as my car will soon be going "home"...

Keep an eye out for some very exciting stuff in the future!

I will of course be posting updates on its progress! (Needs exterior work done, respray ect, blah blah) if that's something that would interest people?

Thank you for 150 members folks! We look forward to bringing you more exciting content as the weeks roll on! Take care, we'll catch you next time...
