Did you guess them right?

Every year The Society of Motor Manufacturers (SMMT) release a whole array of fun and interesting stats about cars, and one of the favourites is the 'best selling car colour of the year' as it never changes here in thr UK.

It never changes because the best selling colour is always grey and 2020 was no exception to this pattern. For the third year in a row, grey has been the most popular choice of colour for a new car purchase supposedly for its versatility and discreetness.

The figures show that 397,197 grey cars were sold over the course of 2020 in the UK accounting for nearlya quarter (24.3%) of all car sales.

And if you thought grey was boring, second and third place in 2020 were black and white, which again are very boring colours. The SMMT also said the rest of the top 10 remained unchanged from 2019 except for yellow and bronze which switched positions as yellow saw a 50% increase.

As for electric vehicles, the most popular colour was white with a total of 25,689 being sold and black was the most popular colour for plug-in hybrids.

SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes said: “2020 was a pretty dark year for the automotive industry and having grey as the top new car colour probably reflects the atmosphere.

“The sector, however, continues to provide valuable mobility, from vans delivering essential goods to private cars helping key workers do their jobs, and click and collect offers a lifeline for the industry, helping to keep manufacturing going.

“It cannot, however, replace the showroom experience and the sector has taken great steps to ensure dealers are Covid-secure with the flexibility to manage customer appointments so car buyers can choose a new car and colour in a safe environment.”

  • I love grey and have been planning on repainting my car a variation of grey/silver myself... until I saw a metallic brown Corvette C8 on the road. It was gorgeous! It gave the car a touch of class and elegance I greatly appreciated. I am now considering painting my car a shade similar, just so mine doesn't look like every other car on the road.

  • Grey is appropriate for the time we’re in. Dull and depressing!

  • Grey seems appropriate and practical in all its various shades, disguises the dust and grime from a distance, especially in a metallic finish. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • You make your choice and pay your money.

I’m afraid I’m in the same camp as I’ve have white now, silver grey and black in my last 7 cars.

Personally I buy cars in the colours they look best in as my favourite colour is blue but the shade hasn’t been correct in the car I’ve been buying at the time. I really like the E63S wagon and that might be the break from tradition as magno blue is the colour I now want!
