Revisiting The Glory Of the Land Rover Camel Trophy
More than 15 years have passed since the last Land Rover Camel Trophy took place.
Started off as a one-off event by the British brand in the 1980s, the Land Rover Camel Trophy caught the attention of adventurers who loved the thrills offered by an overland expedition. An event that was foremost an exploration was greater than any rally or race, where the only sort of competition came as participating teams testing out their overlanding skills, physical and mechanical endurance of their cars against the brute force of nature.
To whatever extent one can imagine, the Land Rover Camel Trophy was one of the best overland experiences that Land Rover had ever created. An event that truly highlighted the capabilities of the company’s off-road vehicles with the brand bringing forth new challenging terrains every year for the enthusiasts. From 1981 till 1998, while Land Rover was the main sponsors of the event, the Camel Trophy expeditions saw enthusiasts participate from continent to continent, across Africa, Australia, South America and Europe with a spirit of adventure never seen before. But the true stars behind the events that spanned over two decades where the Land Rovers, specially the mighty Defenders and the new joiners for the time, the Discovery and the Freelanders.
