Alan Stulberg’s the mastermind behind some amazing gas bikes. He’s also the host of what many think is the best bike show in the US - The Handbuilt Motorcycle Show. But what I love most about Alan and his team is their unapologetic embrace of their #motonerd status. This build’s their first cut at electric, and they’re so fired up about what they learned, that they’re already working on a more radical, ground up custom electric. I'd stay tuned if I were you. revivalcycles.com

Here’s their build story.

REVIVAL HAS ALWAYS MAINTAINED THAT OUR PASSION IS COMBINING VINTAGE BIKES, STYLE AND DESIGN WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY. NORMALLY THAT MEANS WE’RE BUSY UPGRADING A VINTAGE MACHINE WITH TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL MAKE IT MORE RELIABLE, BUT FOR A CHANGE WE GOT THE CHANCE TO TAKE A VERY MODERN MACHINE AND TAKE A SHOT AND STYLING IT IN A MUCH MORE TRADITIONAL AND VINTAGE WAY.

THE ONLY WAY TO TRULY APPRECIATE WHAT WAS DONE TO THIS BIKE IS TRULY TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE FACTORY BIKE. THE BEFORE AND AFTER SHOWS HOW MUCH WORK IT TOOK FOR US TO REALLY MAKE THIS ZERO LOOK LIKE WE FELT IT SHOULD HAVE LOOKED FROM NEW. SIMPLE. VINTAGE. EASY ON THE EYES.

FIRST STEP WAS TO REMOVE THE “GAS TANK” (REALLY A GLOVE COMPARTMENT) AND FABRICATE A HAND FORMED ALLOY COVER WITH A TUCKED IN QUICK CHARGER

REVIVAL CYCLES

WHAT STARTED AS AN LED HEADLIGHT AND SOME COOL AESTHETIC TOUCHES QUICKLY SNOWBALLED INTO A COMPLETE MAKEOVER OF OUR VERY FIRST ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE. THE ENTHUSIASM IN THE WORKSHOP PUSHED THIS PROJECT TO SHOWCASE THAT ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES ARE A REAL OPTION FOR MOTORCYCLE ENTHUSIASTS. EVERYONE IN THE SHOP TOOK THEIR SHOT AT RIDING THIS BIKE….SOME UNDER GRUMBLY PESSIMISTIC MINDSETS, BUT ALL OF US CAME AWAY SURPRISED, INVIGORATED AND TRULY EXCITED ABOUT WHAT THIS MACHINE HAS ON TAP. THE QUIET IS SURPRISINGLY COMFORTING AND DAMN WELL ADDICTIVE! FLYING ALONG AT 70MPH WITH NOTHING BUT WIND NOISE IS PRETTY DAMN COOL!

AFTER EXTENSIVELY STUDYING THE MOTORCYCLE AND BRAINSTORMING, WE HAD TO GET RID OF THE SPACESHIP FEEL AND EMBRACE THE SCRAMBLER LOOK THAT THE CLIENT AND REVIVAL AGREED THAT IT SHOULD HAVE MORE OF. THE FIRST STEP WAS TO REMOVE THE “GAS TANK” (REALLY A GLOVE COMPARTMENT) AND FABRICATE A HAND FORMED ALLOY COVER WITH A TUCKED IN QUICK CHARGER. NOT ONLY DOES THIS ENABLE THE BIKE TO BE CHARGED/TOPPED-OFF MUCH QUICKER, BUT IT ALSO IMPROVED THE SIGHT LINES OF THE MOTORCYCLE FOR A MORE TRADITIONAL DIRT-BIKE LOOK. THIS INCLUDED FABRICATING A NEW MOUNT FOR THE OPTIONAL ZERO QUICK CHARGER, AS WELL AS THE QUICK CHARGER PLUG BY MOVING IT TO A MORE DISCREET LOCATION.

NEXT WAS CLEANING UP THE COCKPIT WITH A CUSTOM GAUGE MOUNT, LSL HANDLEBARS, MOTOGADGET M-MIRRORS AND MOTOGADGET M-BLAZE DISC BAR END TURN SIGNALS. SINCE THIS BIKE MAKES ALMOST “ZERO” NOISE, ADDING MORE VISIBILITY WAS CRUCIAL. WE ADDED M-BLAZE PIN TURN SIGNALS AT EACH CORNER OF THE MOTORCYCLE INTEGRATED INTO CUSTOM STAINLESS STEEL MOUNTS.

NEXT CAME AN LED HEADLIGHT WITH A MORE TRADITIONAL ROUND DESIGN AND A CUSTOM HAND-FABBED ALUMINUM MOUNTING RING WITH MESH SCREEN DRAMATICALLY ALTERING THE LOOK OF THE FRONT OF THE MOTORCYCLE. THE LED HEADLIGHT IS TUCKED NICE AND TIGHT TO THE FORKS THANKS TO HANDMADE POLISHED STAINLESS STEEL MOUNTS WITH A HAND FORMED ALLOY HIGH MOUNT FRONT FENDER. WE THEN WENT TO WORK ON THE ORIGINAL SKID-PLATE AND ELIMINATED MORE PLASTIC COVERS IN FAVOR OF BRUSHED ALLOY COVERS HELPING CEMENT THE SCRAMBLER AESTHETIC. (NO NEED FOR A HIGH MOUNTED EXHAUST ON THIS ELECTRIC BEAST) HAND FORMED ALLOY FORK GUARDS AND A CUSTOM LICENSE PLATE MOUNT FINISH UP THE FAB WORK FOR THE PROJECT. A COAT OF CLEAR COAT ON ALL OF THE ALLOY PANELS HELP TO KEEP THE ALLOY PIECES EASY TO CLEAN AND MAINTENANCE-FREE.

WHILE THIS WAS A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW ZERO DS MODEL, WE ALREADY HAVE PLANS FOR A MUCH MORE RADICAL BUILD BASED AROUND AN ELECTRIC POWERPLANT. THIS WAS A PERFECT WAY TO DIP OUR PROVERBIAL TOE INTO THE ELECTRIC WORLD. THE IMMEDIATE TORQUE, THE BALANCED FEEL AND THE CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENSION AND BRAKES ARE REALLY MAKING THE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE A CANDIDATE FOR RIDERS NEW AND OLD. WE BELIEVE THIS IS THE FUTURE….. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE STYLE AND DESIGN IS CLASSIC ENOUGH THAT IT DOESN’T APPEAR TO BE A SPACESHIP!
